After-care

Getting a tattoo is an exciting experience, but it’s important to remember that it’s also a wound. Proper aftercare is essential for ensuring that your tattoo heals properly and looks its best.

Here are some tips for tattoo aftercare:

  • Follow your artist’s instructions. Different artists have different aftercare preferences, so it’s important to follow the instructions that your artist gives you.
  • Wash your hands thoroughly before touching your tattoo. Do not touch your tattoo with dirty hands. This will help to prevent infection.
  • Gently wash your tattoo with mild, unscented antibacterial  soap and water two or three times a day. Pat it dry with a clean paper towel.
  • After washing, apply a thin layer of fragrance-free moisturizer to your tattoo. We do not recommend using thick petroleum based ointments, so avoid products like vaseline.
  • Avoid soaking your tattoo in water for at least two weeks. This means no swimming, bathing, or hot tubs.
  • Avoid direct sun exposure to your tattoo for at least two weeks. If you must go outside, wear loose-fitting clothing that covers your tattoo. After the tattoo is healed, be sure to apply sunscreen if you know it will be exposed to the sun.
  • Do not scratch or pick at your tattoo. It may itch as it heals, but it’s important to leave it alone. Scratching or picking can damage the skin and lead to infection.

Your tattoo should heal on the surface in approximately two to four weeks. If you notice any signs of infection, such as redness, swelling, or discharge, contact your doctor immediately.

Here are some additional tips to help you care for your new tattoo:

  • Wear loose-fitting clothing. Tight clothing can rub against your tattoo and irritate it.
  • Eat a healthy diet. Eating a healthy diet will help your body to heal properly.
  • Get enough sleep. Getting enough sleep will also help your body to heal.
  • Avoid drinking alcohol and smoking. Alcohol and smoking can slow down the healing process.

If you have any questions or concerns about your tattoo aftercare, be sure to talk to your tattoo artist.
